I have a confession to make…. I am not a 100% documentary photographer!
I want to firstly say that I started off this year taking a course in documentary photography that I learned so much from and was, and still am, super passionate about capturing moments that are completely unfettered by any kind of interference of mine.
But I firmly believe it’s impossible to capture a wedding with zero interference. And personally I’m down with that! Here’s why:
- I’ve never once had a client tell me they didn’t want any direction from me at all. For example, everybody wants those posed up photos with their wedding party and family, and honestly those are some of the most important images people walk away with!
- Same with couple’s photos! I want to make sure we’re taking advantage of the most beautiful sceneries and light, as well as their best angles. Best believe I’ll be giving direction to make these stunning and meaningful for clients.
- Artistically, I just prefer the getting ready spaces to be pretty clutter free.
- Posed photos, whether it’s detail shots of the rings/shoes/invitations or couples photos, can add storytelling elements to the resulting gallery for a client
Those are just a few reasons I’m not a 100% documentary photographer. Have a great day and feel free to leave any questions or comments below!
