Jenna and Scott were a joy to third-wheel for their sunset engagement session at Torrance Beach. As a SoCal girly who grew up surfing, I was so excited when they were into the idea of doing a beach engagement session that included paddling out into the waves. Torrance Beach is where Jenna grew up and where they both are building their lives together today.
Scott expressed that he almost always feels awkward in front of the camera. I tell everybody it’s completely normal and welcome! It’s super important to me to create a safe space for anyone I’m photographing – having your photo taken can feel super vulnerable. One way I do this is by welcoming in that awkwardness, and whatever people are feeling for that matter. It’s a totally natural part of the process. I believe in giving ourselves permission to feel what we’re feeling – that alone is beautiful, even if you think it’s not what “should” be at the moment. And just know that that the energy will evolve, if you let it! I find that expressing the awkwardness can turn into silly, goofy, authentic smiles and laughs.
The session started with frolicking around on the shore. Jenna brought a gorgeous white flowy dress that stood out beautifully against the ocean backdrop. We did a mix of dynamic and still shots, and then we all got into the water. I love the resulting images of their gallery. The warmth, deep love, and connection they share together shine beautifully through their photos.
Images shot on both digital and 35mm film.
